London - There is a night and day difference between the soundstages of TimBurton's "dark shadow" and his previous film, "Alice in Wonderland," and no surprise, it was a filmmaker much more comfortable in the dark.
The digital ambitions of "Alice" numbing weeks of work in a green-screen room,and by the end of Burton was desperate to return to his roots - the building of amovie house and then ghost it with his unique brand of cemetery cabaret.
'Dark Shadows' reinterprets a favorite
show from its director's and star's youths
"Dark Shadow" one eccentric vampire romance with
Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer and Eva Green, he performed a small one-man
rebellion against CG imagery, the story has a few digital effects, but where
the script for a Maine fishing village s waterfront, circa 1972, Burton convinced Warner Bros. and the
film's producers to build on the back lot of England's Pinewood Studios
fascinating instead of on a computer screen.
"It's so nice to come here to work - not everything is green," said Burton last summer as he walked around the Gothic, crushed-velvet frills of the mansion that is home Depp's aristocratic vampire, Barnabas Collins. "It's a soap opera - or begin - and that really means working with the actors, sets and help everyone, and it's just more fun."
"Dark Shadows," which came May 11, is a strange creature and an ongoing mystery. A trailer that recently premiered mixed reactions, she cut shows possible suggested that the film is an elaborate goof on the overwrought "Twilight" movies, but actually, like so many Burton projects, this one is a broken valentine to the pop culture obsessions of his youth.
In the film, Depp plays Collins, the 18th century playboy of the Maine high society whose Lothario ways the wrath of Angelique Bouchard, a witch portrayed by Green earned. She changed him into a vampire and sent him to an underground tomb where he was imprisoned until 1972. This is when a disgruntled construction crew set him free, and in a world of lava lamps, glam rock, and Richard M. Nixon, he found purpose in the new era. The ensemble cast features a number of Burton's regular players to Depp and Pfeiffer, there is the director's romantic partner, Helena Bonham Carter, Chloe Moretz and the English horror legend Christopher Lee.
Setting and characters taken from the many foreign TV series "dark shadow," an ABC soap opera that reported 1225 episodes before it went off the air in 1971 also mentioned. Created by Dan Curtis, who later architecture "the winds of war" mini, the show starred Jonathan Frid as the tortured Barnabas and ghosts and spirits to the afternoon hours usually pretty cunning surgeons and heiresses.
Unlike "The Addams Family" and "The Munsters," has this monster-mash of a show was a spin-flavor, which is why this young outsiders called Goths today attracted. Three of them were Burton, Depp and Pfeiffer, and they were almost identical to the memories of racing home from school the same transfer foreign fishing.

"This is a different animal," said Burton said. "If I go back and look at somethinglike'Star Trek," it is not so difficult to analyze the appeal was, and even if the showis dated you identify what it is that it works. The "dark shadow" an appeal was a bit more abstract. I loved, it was the fact that it is a melodramatic soap opera,and, well, that flies in the face of any modern studio's interests as far as themovies. But we went, was a mixture, and it's always what I'm interested in, I think most of my films are mixtures of light and dark and serious things and things intheir humor. "
