The
'Pirates of the Caribbean' star will receive the trophy at the MTV Movie
Awards in Los Angeles today Sunday (03.06.12).
The actor is being given the award as a celebration of his contribution to cinema in the last twenty years, in films like 'Edward Scissorhands', 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and 'Sleepy Hollow'.
Stephen Friedman, MTV's president said: "Johnny Depp is a fear, once in a generation of talent with a chameleon-like ability to inhabit any role.
"With years of extraordinary performance, Johnny has truly earned the Generation Award, and we honor him with a can't-miss tribute to the Movie Awards this year."
Previous winners include MTV Generation Award to Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Bullock, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey.
Johnny is currently filming his latest movie, 'The Lone Ranger', in which he plays the cowboy owner of Native American companion, Tonto, a member of the Comanche Nation. Although the character is fictional, after hearing about the role, Comanches, Johnny invited to join their ranks.
The president of Americans for Indian Opportunity LaDonna Harris said: "It seemed a natural step to officially welcome our family Comanche.
"I approached, and Johnny was very receptive to the idea. Seemed proud to receive the invitation, and we are honored that they accepted with enthusiasm."
The MTV Movie Awards will be hosted by comedian Russell Brand and held at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California on Sunday. You will then be transmitted over the network on June 4.
